Students will develop a strong comprehension of the aesthetics, tools, and methods used in designing with type. Emphasis will be placed on developing a working knowledge of the terminology of typography and typesetting skills.
Type Poster
This exercise helps students understand the process of typeface research and create a simple poster with logical visual and content hierarchy achieved through a modular grid system.
Collaborative Cook Book
This book will consist of recipes and page layouts from each student in your class. Each student will be responsible for the design of a spread that follows a concept for their design while following the flexible modular grid.
Objectives

■ To learn to work both independently in your layout, but also create a sense of cohesion with your collective class
■ To establish format, hierarchy, appropriate typeface choices, and ligatures
■ To display typesetting skills and precision in the layout of your design
Modern Grid
Students learn to design the interior pages for a collective book of modern typographic grids and perfect bookbinding techniques. Each student will be responsible for (re)producing a modern typographic grid.
Objectives:
■ Create individual work while contributing to the cohesion of a collaborative class project
■ Examine the function of a modern typographic grid
■ Develop a book that functions as a typographic resource for future design projects
