Concept Strategies

This course focuses on conceptual thinking techniques, strategy-based problem solving and brainstorming, and giving and receiving constructive criticism. Students will explore using design thinking and human-centered design methods in developing a diverse body of design artifacts such as brand creation, packaging design, advertising campaigns, infographic,s and basic UI design.

Branding System

Students will create a brand, name the product, write a brand story, and design a logo. They will take this logo/identity and extend the brand further in Project 2 by developing a series of three packages that will work together as a system. Upon completion, students will learn effective research and brand storming techniques that will teach them how to name companies and explore and execute logos that clearly represent the brand and its values.

Packaging Design

 

Utilize the brand and logo you created in Project to create a 3-piece packaging system for your product. Students will learn:
■ Brand building
■ Systems design
■ The role visual research plays in the creative process
■ Design methodologies
■ Iterative processes
■ How image, image style, color, and typography communicate brand voice
■ Working with dimension
■ Exploration of materials and processes
■ How users interact with design solutions (user personas/user testing)
■ Craftsmanship, hand-built comprehensive layouts

Ambient Campaign

 

Students work in teams to conceptualize and produce an ambient advertising campaign for a non-profit. The final ambient ad will be photoshopped into the environment where it will appear. Students will learn:
■ Working in a collaborative/creative team (teams of 3 students)
■ Traditional and visual research
■ Copywriting for advertising: taglines, headlines, copy, etc.
■ Brand voice and tone
■ Communication through forms: typography, design, imagery, color, placementIterative processes
■ Advanced Photoshop mockup techniques

Infographic Design

 

Students will create an educational infographic web page that provides a distinct point of view of a topic of interest. Upon completion, students will learn:
■ Visual and traditional research
■ Creative visual storytelling
■ Creative writing and editing
■ Communication through forms: typography, design, imagery, color
■ Content & Visual hierarchy
■ Wire-framing content (intro to UX)
■ Screen design (intro to UI)
■ Advanced Illustrator techniques
■ InVision mockups
