ARTC 1302
Imaging 1

This course is an introduction to graphic software as it applies to creative thinking and visual problem-solving. The course introduces the basic terms, concepts, tools, and methods related to the field of communication design. A series of projects will reinforce and extend the elements of design and principals of organization and integrate the computer into the design process.

Pictogram Design

This project serves as an introduction to systems design. Upon completion, students will learn:
▪ to utilize the elements of design as a visual language across a system.
▪ to practice critical thinking skills in research and development.
▪ to develop an understanding of vector graphics principles.
▪ to use shape building techniques in the creation of artwork.

Project Outcome
Students will explore visual form to create a series of four pictograms for a zoo. Students will need to consider visual characteristics from each animal and how they might be carried over the design system.

Letterforms
& Objects

Students explore one of the visual approaches of icon design by finding visual similarity and proportional relationships between object and letterforms.

Project Outcome
Students will select the initials from their first and last names. For one initial, select a serif font and combine it with a natural object. For the other initial, use a san serif and combine it with a manmade object.

Vernacular
Type Poster

This project allows the students to explore and understand the value of vernacular typography in the creative process. Vernacular type carries a sense of history, culture, and place, and serves as a visual resource for many designers. Upon completion, students will learn:
▪ To show critical thinking skills in research and development
▪ To explore compositional approaches to using type as image
▪ To apply basic typographic principles (hierarchy, contrast, composition)
▪ To practice working with assets across applications
▪ To integrate cultural and historical contexts into personal design work

Outcome:
Students photographically document their selection of vernacular typography and create a poster expressing a specific geographical area. Students will utilize type as an image with consideration of typographic form-making, collage, composition, hierarchy, and scale.
